Tire Repair Qualifications
In order to have a tire repaired, there are a few qualifications the tire must meet. First, the damage to the tire must be within the tread area. Damage outside the tread will disqualify a tire for repair. Additionally, the puncture size must not be larger than ΒΌ of an inch (about 6mm) in size. Anything larger and the repair is disallowed. It’s also important to note any other damage that may have been caused by driving on a flat tire. Driving long distances on a flat or underinflated tire can damage the steel belts inside the tire and disqualify the tire for repair. You may also want to share with the technicians at Mario’s Used Tire Shop and Auto if you used something like fix-a-flat in the tire before they begin the repair assessment.
How is a Tire Repaired?
The first step in repairing your tire is removing the tire from the rim. Our technicians have to inspect the inside and outside of the tire for damage. If the damage is more extensive than what can be seen on the outside, you may need to replace the tire. Once the technician inspects the tire and finds the damage, the puncture is filled with a rubber plug and then sealed on the inside to keep water from getting into the tire and corroding the steel belts. A plug or a patch alone is not enough to safely repair the tire. Instead, both steps must be completed before it’s safe to drive on the repaired tire. After your Mario’s Used Tire Shop and Auto technician has repaired the tire, they’ll remount it on the rim, balance, and mount the tire on your vehicle. They’ll also inspect the rim for any damage to the wheel, such as elongated lug nut holes, that can cause issues when you drive.
